Honors Creative Writing
This is an elective course which explores many modes of creative writing including poetry, short story, parody and one-act plays . Open to any junior or senior. Sophomores who have taken the introductory course as a freshman may also enroll.

Welcome to IB Language A: Literature! This is the "proper" name for the course you will be taking. Please have reading of Life of Pi completed by the time school begins.
Thursday, January 3 Checked out Perfume - The Story of a Murderer. Handouts for Vocabulary Study and Syntax & Characterization Study distributed. Interactive Notes taken as introduction. Close reading of first 3 pages. HOMEWORK - Read to page 37 by MONDAY. DUE NEXT FRIDAY - Read all of Part I (to page 111), Part 1 Vocabulary Check, Homework given today on Syntax and Characterization
Monday, January 7 Research Blitz - Met in Library to research topics related to Perfume. Presentation of information will be Wednesday. Reading Check over pages 1-37 done in class. Short discussion followed.

Friday, Jan 11 - Substitute teacher present. Took up Part 1 Assignment for Perfume. Handout on Effect of Punctuation completed and thorough collormarking of a passage from Part 1. Homework - Read Part 2
Tuesday, Jan 15 - Finished Research Blitz presentations, Went over definitions for Part 1 & 2 Vocabulary. Discussed and presented Punctuation Activity. Discussed writing about style and use of "formula." Homework: Using color marked passages from last class write statement of style (see handout). Finish Reading Perfume! By January 22.
Thursday, Jan 17 Most of class devoted to information on scheduling for next school year. Students need to get teacher and parent signatures. Return cards next Thursday to counselors during English class.
Students also received detailed information on English HL requirements and assessments for IB for Part 1, 2nd Semester Junior Year.

Returned PART I Assignment with comments; Finished Vocabulary for Perfume; Discussed Suskind's style by examining color marked passages.
HOMEWORK: Prepare for Seminar.

HOMEWORK: Prepare for Seminar Day 2. REMINDER: Reflective Statement based on the Interactive Oral will be due next Wednesday, Jan 30.
Monday, Jan 28 - Information on Reflective Statement given. DUE NEXT CLASS. Completed Graded Seminar Discussion of Perfume.
Wednesay, Jan 30 - Returned graded work. Turned in Reflective Statements (30 pts.). Analyzed "Grenouille the Great" scene using style elements. HOMEWORK: Identify 4 style elements from assigned section and write an analytic statement about them.
SNOW DAY!! Friday, Feb 1. Because of the Snow Day our calendar moves up.
Tuesday Feb 5 - Homework as described above is due and preparation work will be done for the Teacher Supervised Writing.
THURSDAY - FEB 7 - Teacher supervised writing.
TUESDAY - FEB 12 - Perfume Class Test. Checked out The Sound of Waves novels.

Thursday - Feb 14 - Did "Spotlight on Japan" activity to begin thinking of issues that will arise in novel, The Sound of Waves. Introduced Interactive Oral Assignment.
HOMEWORK: Read Chapt 5-11 and Research given topic for presentation.
Tuesday, Feb 19 - Opener, discussed issues derived from setting. Presentation on author Yukio Mishima. Half of class devoted to review for ACT English test.
HOMEWORK: Read all of Sound of Waves by Monday, Feb 25. Research given topic for presentations. See schedule for presentation times.
Sorry no entries because of ACT Prep work ... Class as normal resumes next Thursday March 7. Tentative schedule to finish The Sound of Waves:
Thurs. 3/7 - Images Presentations; Book discussion; Homework: Write a theme and support with images from the novel.
Mon. 3/11 - Final book discussion; turn in homework
Wed. 3/13 - REFLECTIVE STATEMENT due. Class Summative Test
Mon. 3/18 - Teacher supervised writing HOMEWORK - Read short story "The Man With Very Enormous Wings" (handout given in class) ANNOTATE and be ready to discuss questions at the end.
Wednesday 3/20 Class discussed short story. Magical realism defined. Checked out Chronicle of a Death Foretold. 4 Corners Activity. Info on author, setting and novel structure.
Contents page goes in the front of notebook. 6 dividers, labeled as section designated on Contents Page, will organize student for 2 years of IB English
