Block 3 and 4 have switched (if your child came to math 3rd block they are now in math for 4th block, if they came during 4th block they are now in 3rd block)
Please make sure your child continues to study multiplication facts. We are currently working really hard on adding and subtracting fractions, and finding equivalent fractions in Blocks 1,2, and 4. In Block 3 we are learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions, how to convert between the two and add and subtract those numbers, as well as find equivalent fractions.
I have noticed it is extremely difficult for students who do not know their multiplication facts to understand how to solve the problems we are working on in class. The most important thing that can happen at home is memorizing those single digit facts! Study Study Study!!! Thanks for your help!
Adding or Subtracting Fractions
1. Check to see if the denominators (number at the bottom of a fraction) are common (same or alike). If they are different I have to find a common denominator.
2. Find a common denominator. (Use Multiplication)
3. Add or subtract the fractions. I only add or subtract the numerators (number at the top of a fraction) , the denominators (number at the bottom of a fraction) stay the same.
4. Check to see if the answer will simplify or reduce. (Use Division)
Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions
denominator x whole number + numerator = new numerator in the improper fraction
The denominator does not change.
Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
numerator divided by the denominator=
The quotient= the whole number
The remainder= the new numerator
The denomintor does not change
Order of Operations:
Please (parenthesis)
Excuse (exponents)
My (multiplication)
Dear (division)
Aunt (addition)
Sally (subtraction)

Weekly Summary:
This week we will continue our research
We have now moved on to researching different kinds of fast/slow changes that happen in the environment. We had some really great nominations... but the majority chose to research tsunamis. After our research, we will take our information and apply it to write an article using various text features. They are working very hard! It is amazing how well they are able to use technology and apply it to their research!
Our new book is called Rip-Roaring Russell by Johnanna Jurwitz. WE have read the first chapter together. They will love this book! It is a lot like Tales of A Fourth Grade Nothing. Our ultimate goal will be to write a comparative paper comparing the character Russell to Fudge.
Be sure to encourage your child to read AR books! They will have to have 15 points by December 9th!
Ask your child how many points they have to date....
REMINDERS!
Please sign the agenda nightly
All children must reach 15 AR points by this Friday, December 9th. This assignment will be worth 100 points.
Enjoy your afternoon and have a great night!
