Gifted and Talented Program

Program Description: The Gifted and Talented Program at Athens-Chilesburg Elementary School is set up in two program levels:
Kindergarten-3rd Grade: The Primary Talent Pool, which consists of K-3rd graders, is a pull-out program in which students learn creative problem solving and critical thinking skills. Logic, high-level math processing skills, and processes in teamwork and leadership are taught in small groups throughout the day. Special focus will be given to Literacy projects, as well. In order for a student to be in the Primary Talent Pool, he/she must be recommended by the GT Committee.
4th and 5th Grade: The Quest Program is designed specifically for 4th and 5th grade students. Students in Quest have been formally identified as Gifted and Talented Students. This means that they have received special documentation from the GT Committee and have parental permission to be in the program. Students in Quest will work on individual research projects on various topics throughout the year. They will also have several opportunities to create web pages, cite sources in research, give public presentations, and learn critical thinking and creative problem solving strategies.
